Kai Kinugawa Ryokan

Description

Kai Kinugawa is a hot spring ryokan with baths fed by the famous Kinugawa Hot Spring. It overlooks Kinugawa River from a high hilltop, which guests reach via monorail. Inside the premises is a wide courtyard that boasts beautiful seasonal colors, and interiors decorated with stunning local craft artworks.

Located 2 hours by train from Tokyo.

Go to Kinugawa onsen station then take a taxi to Kai Kinugawa.

Rooms are designed to allow guests to fully enjoy the surrounding nature. Terraces constructed from local Oya stone extend over lavish forest scenery, while soothing breezes add an exquisite touch to the private outdoor hot spring baths featured in some of our special rooms.

dining

Kai Kinugawa is located in Tochigi, a region of rich mountain soil and beautiful rivers that produce plenty of high-quality vegetables, fruit, and fish. These ingredients are arranged into feasts for the eye and palate, such as a casserole heated by an 800℃ stone.

Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients. A set meal is served in the mornings, with a main dish that pays homage to local culinary culture—finely grated rainbow trout, vegetables, and soy beans cooked in miso.

wellness

Both the indoor baths and outdoor baths offer expansive views of forests and gardens that sport different colors throughout the year, from pink cherry blossoms in the spring to vivid greens in the summer, vibrant colors in the fall, and snowscapes in the winter.

Ceramics & Music

Every night, the ryokan hosts a concert that showcases the soft sounds produced by flutes, drums, and other instruments custom-made by Mashiko-yaki ceramic artisans.

Kinugawa River Boating

The Kinugawa Line Kudari River Cruise is a ride down Kinugawa River in flat bottomed, wooden boats. The cruises lasts about 40 minutes and travel through mostly undeveloped stretches of the river, passing rock formations along the way that resemble various animals and objects.

Papermaking

This workshop involves making paper from unusual materials, such as fall leaves picked from the ryokan courtyard. The final product makes a perfect souvenir.

Yuagari Lounge

Cold seasonal drinks, local sakes, and popsicles are some of the complimentary refreshments offered at this lounge, which looks out onto a bamboo garden. Guests are invited to cool off here after a bath.

Rainbow View Bridge

This 140-meter-long suspension bridge connects the Kinugawa hot spring resort to a giant, 70-meter rock formation known as Tateiwa (“Shield Rock,” named for its resemblance to a medieval shield). The bridge is suspended forty meters above the Kinugawa river and provides marvelous views of the ever-changing scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Kinugawa Onsen Ropeway

A ropeway connecting Kinugawa Onsen Mountain Foot Station and the Maruyama summit at an altitude of 700 meters. From the observation deck you can see the Kinugawa river and the hot spring town, if the weather is nice, you can see the sky tree.

Ikari Lake

This man-made lake was created upon completion of the Ikari Dam in 1956. It can be found where the Okika river and the Yunishi River meet. From the Lake Ikari Visitor Center, high above the peninsula, you can enjoy breathtaking views. Fall is the best time to visit as the shores are awash in vibrant autumn colors.
