Kai Kawaji Ryokan

Description

Kai Kawaji is a riverside hot spring ryokan that pays homage to pastoral Japanese scenery, with an entryway that passes right under a traditional row house and a watermill located on the premises. Large windows offer scenic views of nearby hills and a river that runs past the ryokan’s outdoor baths.

Located 3 hours by train from Tokyo.

Go to Tobu Kawaji Yumoto station then take a free shuttle bus to Kai Kawaji.

Rooms are designed to allow guests to fully soak in the area's majestic scenery. Each room features a custom-built sofa that invites guests to lie back and enjoy the views, which fill the room's windows like a private art display.

dining

Meals are enjoyed in semi-private booths, where guests are served dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, such as river fish and konjac—a type of yam that is grated and then jellied to create a local delicacy.

Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The breakfast set features a vegetable-rich casserole that is derived from a dish featured in a Kawaji legend.

wellness

Spacious indoor bath halls and two riverside outdoor baths fed by Kawaji Hot Spring—known for its waters’ skin healing effects—provide the perfect location to comfortably enjoy the vibrant surrounding scenery, which changes dramatically through the seasons.

Water mill tour

This tour introduces guests to the mechanisms of traditional water mills, which were once used in Japan to scoop up water for irrigating rice fields, husking grains, and turning querns.

Kinugawa River Boating

The Kinugawa Line Kudari River Cruise is a ride down Kinugawa River in flat bottomed, wooden boats. The cruises lasts about 40 minutes and travel through mostly undeveloped stretches of the river, passing rock formations along the way that resemble various animals and objects.

Papermaking

This workshop involves making paper from unusual materials, such as fall leaves picked from the ryokan courtyard. The final product makes a perfect souvenir.

Yuagari Lounge

Located between the men’s and women’s bath halls, this lounge provides complimentary cold tea and refreshing local beverages that allow guests to cool off after a dip in the baths.

Rainbow View Bridge

This 140-meter-long suspension bridge connects the Kinugawa hot spring resort to a giant, 70-meter rock formation known as Tateiwa (“Shield Rock,” named for its resemblance to a medieval shield). The bridge is suspended forty meters above the Kinugawa river and provides marvelous views of the ever-changing scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Kinugawa Onsen Ropeway

A ropeway connecting Kinugawa Onsen Mountain Foot Station and the Maruyama summit at an altitude of 700 meters. From the observation deck you can see the Kinugawa river and the hot spring town, if the weather is nice, you can see the sky tree.

Ikari Lake

This man-made lake was created upon completion of the Ikari Dam in 1956. It can be found where the Okika river and the Yunishi River meet. From the Lake Ikari Visitor Center, high above the peninsula, you can enjoy breathtaking views. Fall is the best time to visit as the shores are awash in vibrant autumn colors.
